Mammogram

I want to have an annual Mammogram

You can have a Mammogram at a breast clinic or a hospital. Breast surgeons or radiologists see breast conditions. Sometimes ob/gyn doctors see that but not always. Not every hospital has the facility therefore recommend to check the availability. A breast exam is often a combination with a Mammogram, a manual exam and an ultrasound. Many clinics provide them as one set of a course examination.

The availability of the technical staff and the facility is often limited. We recommend to arrange an appointment well-advanced.

How much is Mammogram?

Japanese Health Insurance does not cover an annual breast exam. This can cost over 10,000 yen for a set of the course examination. If you have pains or discomfort on your breast then the insurance pays 70% of a Mammogram or ultrasound test and also necessary treatments. We can help with locating a facility near you.

Free Mammogram

Your city or ward office provides a coupon to subsidize a Mammogram exam. You can use this coupon at specific local hospitals and you only have to pay a small fee when you present the coupon. The coupons are generally post-mailed to an eligible age group of residents automatically but sometimes the doesn’t happen and in that case you need to reach out the city office to check your eligibility and have it mailed to your address. Some cities have the coupon ready at the hospital and you need to show your ID to receive this benefit. The system differs depending on where you live.

JHI can find how to obtain the coupon and also whether you are eligible to receive it, arrange it to be mailed to you and also make an appointment with a hospital that accepts the coupon.
