Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy

Where can I have a Gastroscopy or a Colonoscopy?

A gastroscopy is performed to check symptoms or to diagnose or treat conditions. A thin tube is inserted from your month or nose to look your stomach. You can undergo this procedure at a gastroenterology clinic or a gastroenterology department of a hospital. You need to fast from the night before procedure.

A colonoscopy is used to check your entire large bowel. A thin, flexible tube is passed through your back passage and around your large bowel. The doctor will take a look at your bowel to check conditions and the cause of your problems. If polyps are found they will be removed during this procedure. You can undergo this procedure at a gastrointestinal surgeon’s clinic or a gastrointestinal department of a hospital. You need to do a bowel prep for a colonoscopy. You will be given a laxative and detailed instructions to empty your bowel. Sedation is used and you cannot drive after the procedure, need to arrange someone to pick up if there is no public transportation available.

How do I arrange a Gastroscopy or a Colonoscopy?

You cannot have both procedures without having a consultation with a doctor in advance. We receive enquiries from clients wanting to make an appointment for the procedures directly however this can be risky even if their home doctor recommended to do so. You need to have a consultation with a doctor who performs the procedures first and well explained about them and what to prepare for.

How much is a Gastroscopy or a Colonoscopy?

Both procedures are covered by Japanese Health Insurance if you have symptoms that need to be checked by these procedures. When covered by the Japanese Health Insurance, a gastroscopy is about 10,000-20,000 yen, a colonoscopy is about 20,000-30,000 yen. Please note this fee a general information only and not the exact fee. It can be different depending on the facility.

A gastroscopy and colonoscopy is also a part of a physical examination, or a Ningen Dock course. The insurance does not cover both procedures for this case. Fees vary depends on the course and the facility.

JHI can help you find a clinic/hospital that can perform a gastroscopy and a colonoscopy for residents. Conatct us by email.

Medical tourism companies arrange these procedures for tourists and visitors. Please contact them if you are not a resident.
