Moving to Japan With A Medical Condition

We have helped many clients who have medical conditions relocated to Japan.
Here are the things recommended to prepare before you come to Japan.

Bring a Transfer of Care Letter from Your Doctor

The letter should include the following information.

  • Your diagnosis
  • Current treatment and medication
  • Test results needed to transfer your care to a Japanese doctor
  • Recommended or necessary follow-ups/future plans

English letters are accepted. Major hospitals in Japan request this letter to make an appointment, please make sure to bring one with you. You do not need to bring a whole medical record, one to a few page summery is good enough.

Please contact us when the letter is ready, We can help you connect to a local service.

Bring 1-3 month supply of your current medication

This is recommended especially when you are going to live in a rural area in Japan. It may take a while to be able to see a local doctor due to your or doctor’s availability. You can apply for an import permit to bring your medication to Japan – read our Bringing Medication into Japan page for how to apply the import permit. We can also check if your medication is available in Japan.

We can help with the following services for your relocation to Japan.

  • Find an appropriate doctor/clinic/hospital for your needs.
  • Make necessary arrangements, such as making appointments and patient registration.
  • Act as a translator and assist you in communicating with medical staff.
  • Guide and inform you of Japanese Health Insurance systems and services
  • Help you with paperwork to get medical reimbursement
  • Subsidy application if your condition is applicable
