I May Have a STD, What Should I Do?

I may have a STD, what should I do?

Men can get tested and treated at a urology clinic and women can do that at a gynecologist. You need to see a doctor who orders the tests for you. There is no test only option especially when you have symptoms.

Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Candida, Trichomoniasis is usually a urine test for men and a smear test for women.

Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C is a blood test. You can get tested for those at a general internal medicine clinic too. The treatment of hepatitis is provided at specialist hospitals. Medication for hepatitis treatment is very expensive. Government subsidy is available for this. We can help find specialist hospitals and make application to subsidy.

Genital Herpes and Genital Warts can be treated at a dermatology, a urology or a gynecology clinic. Your doctor will decide what type of tests are appropriate.

For HIV treatment, see Sexual Health page.

We can help you locate a local clinic/hospital for you. Contact us by email.

How much will it cost?

Japanese Health Insurance will cover the tests, treatments and medications when you have symptoms. However, you cannot get tested for all of the STD tests when you use insurance – your doctor decides the testing items that may be related to your symptoms. You will need to pay 30% of the total costs. It is likely to be less than 10,000 yen for tests and treatments.
Hepatitis and HIV tests are generally more expensive even with insurance.

My partner is positive. I want to get tested but I have no symptom

You can get tested for the possible STDs but it will be decided by the doctor whether the tests are covered by insurance. Consult your doctor if insurance can be applied to your case.
